The Ring Doorbell has revolutionized the traditional doorbell.
If you have a Ring, you know that you need a specific screwdriver to open the device up to change its batteries or reposition it.
The screws used to keep the Ring doorbell intact and in place are fairly small. The head diameter is 5 mm, the drive diameter is 3 mm, and the thread length is 10 mm. Ring screws can only be taken out by a Torx T6 head screwdriver.
While the device comes with the screwdriver, a lot of people misplace it and have trouble finding a replacement.
Keep reading as this guide explains the screws and screwdrivers needed for the Ring.
What Kind Of Screwdriver Do I Need To Remove A Ring Doorbell?
Ring screws can only be taken out by a Torx T6 head screwdriver.
The screwdriver has a hole in its tip, allowing it to be easily interred into the screw and then turned.
The screws used to assemble the Ring are known as tamper-proof screws.
These are different from your regular screws.
Therefore, you can’t use your flat or a basic Torx screwdriver.
The team at Ring decided to use unconventional screws because there were reports of tampering with devices and thieves loosening the screws to steal the doorbell.
With the change, it is much harder to steal the device, since robbers don’t usually carry the specific screwdriver needed to dislodge the doorbell.
What Size Are The Ring Doorbell Screws?
The screws used to keep the doorbell intact and in place are fairly small.
The head diameter is 5 mm, the drive diameter is 3 mm, and the thread length is 10 mm.
The screws won’t be commonly found in other appliances in the home.
Therefore, if you misplace them, you will need to go out and get new screws.
Do You Have To Drill Holes For The Ring Doorbell?
Yes, the dimensions of a Ring Doorbell are different from the traditional ones.
t is 2.4 inches by 4.98 inches by 1.10 inches, far bigger than your traditional doorbell.
Therefore, even if you decide to position it in the same spot, you will need to drill holes to accommodate the doorbell.
You may find solutions online that allow you to mount the doorbell without screws.
We don’t recommend that, because the doorbell isn’t as secure when you do that.
Does A Ring Come With A Drill Bit?
To make drilling holes easier for Ring installation, the doorbell does come with a drill bit.
All you have to do is insert it into a drill and start the process.
Make sure you drill only in the spot where you want to install the doorbell.
The drill can go through wood and brick.
However, if you have any trouble with drilling a hole, you can use any standard exterior surface drill to finish the job.
How To Unscrew A Ring Doorbell?
To remove a Ring Doorbell, you need to do the following:
- Turn off the Ring Doorbell. If your doorbell is connected to the electrical system, there is a chance you may be shocked during the process, to avoid this turn off the circuit breaker that the doorbell is connected to.
- Remove the doorbell’s faceplate. You first need to unscrew the security screw at the bottom of the base plate using the Torx T6 screwdriver. Detach the faceplate once done.
- You can now take the battery out if that is why you wanted to open the device.
- If you want to remove the doorbell completely, you will need a screwdriver now. Once the faceplate is removed, you will have access to the base of the doorbell, remove the four Phillips head screws on each side of it, and you are done.
How To Unscrew A Ring Doorbell Without A Tool?
You can try dislodging the doorbell using a dull-edged object, but we wouldn’t recommend it.
You would need to use a lot of force to dislodge the screws, which are there for the sole purpose of keeping the doorbell mounted.
When you try to remove the doorbell with the specific tools for the job, you risk damaging the device.
Therefore, we suggest that the only way you remove it is with tools designed for the job.
If you don’t have access to the T6 screwdriver, you can always order a replacement.
Ring sells replacements, or you can find them on Amazon also.
Why Do I Need To Open The Ring Device?
There are two reasons why you would want to open the device, first to replace the battery, and second to change the doorbell location.
The device requires power to run.
The battery that comes with the device lasts anywhere from six to twelve months.
It all depends on how often the motion sensors are triggered.
When the battery runs out, you have the option to recharge or replace it.
In either case, you will have to unscrew the faceplate and take the battery out.
Alternatively, let’s say you didn’t pay close attention when installing the doorbell, and it’s high or low.
You will need to unscrew it and reposition it, so it’s at an optimal level for the camera to give you a clear view of who is at your door.
While you can find tons of ways to mount your Ring doorbell to your home, the most secure is with the screws provided by the company.
Otherwise, the device isn’t securely mounted and can be taken off by force.
Opening the device is fairly easy, as long as you have the tools to do it.
If you don’t, you can always buy a replacement screwdriver, which is easily available online.
